URBAN PROJECTS

FOR A BIODIVERSE RIVER TORRES

The urban landscape undergoes constant changes as a result of the interventions of society in nature through the development of different productive activities. This are generally not accompanied by an integrated planning process, necessary to guarantee the sustainability of natural, social and economic systems ( Tres and Reis, 2007).

Under the motto "For a biodiverse River Torres", the project "Ecological Rehabilitation Interurban Biological Corridor Río Torres" was born in Los Conejos Este site, San José, in alliance with the Hydrographic Basins and Corridors Program Biologicals of the Municipality of San José and the NGO´s Rio Urbano and Diwö Ambiental to join efforts for recovering the heavily invaded by “elephant” grass site.

Two interventions were carried out. The first, in June 2021, where with the support of 30 volunteers we managed to plant 95 arboreal individuals of 20 different species. The second intervention was carried out in August 2021, with the support of 25 volunteers, planting 87 trees of 5 species, adding a total of 182 trees planted on the site.

The intervention in the site "Los Conejos Este" represents an effort to recover degraded urban sites through the implementation of ecological rehabilitation techniques that will adjust to the current conditions of the ecosystem, in order to maintain the functionality of the present patches and recover the connections between the neighboring fragments of the biological corridor.

ROTONDA CRISTAL

"Rotonda Cristal" is an arboriculture project developed in October 2019, in conjunction with the Coordination of External Volunteering of FIFCO-Cristal and the support of the Directorate of Security and Beautification of Roads of the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT), in which a right-of-way was intervened in Belén, Heredia, Costa Rica, with the support of more than 50 volunteers and the planting of 55 trees of 16 native species, with the aim of embellishing and perceiving other ecosystem services.

The Rotonda Cristal is an example of what can be achieved with public-private partnerships to improve public spaces and increase ecosystem services. For a year, with the support of FIFCO and MOPT, we will carry out maintenance and monitoring for the proper development of the trees, but there is still much more to do. We want to continue improving and beautifying public spaces for the enjoyment of all.
